The “OG” SUV Gets An Update for 2025
In 1991, the Ford Explorer introduced the era of the SUV, and the roomy vehicle has been going strong ever since. For the 2025 model year, the Ford Explorer is getting an update that adds technology, pairs down the trim level options, and changes a few styling elements.
Despite the styling and trim level updates, the 2025 Ford Explorer specs remain the same. The original SUV still comes with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The sporty ST comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

Uncomplicating the Trim Levels
For years, the Explorer has been available in a plethora of trims and options, making it challenging to choose one that fits perfectly. The 2025 Explorer will be available in four trims: Active, ST-Line, Platinum, and ST. The Ford Explorer Platinum will be the most luxurious of the trims, while the Explorer ST features sporty interior and exterior accents and a faster V6.
Drivers who choose the top three trims can add a unique new feature: a black-painted roof. BlueCruise hands-free driving will also be optional on the top three trims.
Ford understands that drivers loved models like the 2020 Ford Explorer Limited, and the automaker is expecting the ST-Line to replace that model. This mid-level trim will have 20-inch alloy wheels, rear-wheel drive, a flat-bottom sport ST steering wheel, heated second-row seats, and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system with 12 speakers. Models with rear-wheel drive have all-wheel drive as an optional feature.
New Styling and Technology Features
On the outside, the 2025 Explorer gets new headlights surrounding a more prominent grille, front bumpers with “skid plate” styling, and a wider stance. Each trim gets a different grille. The ST-Line and ST have gloss-black honeycomb with logo badges, while the entry-level Active has black with chrome, and the Platinum has a wing style in black with satin chrome accents.
Ford modernized the taillights and added an illuminated Explorer logo in a script font. The automaker also added new paint options, most notably the Vapor Blue metallic, which looks fantastic with the red-painted brake calipers on the ST trim.
The Ford Explorer interior has soft-touch surfaces and a refined, minimalist style. The new Ford Digital Experience software debuts in the 2025 Explore. The new software is in the center infotainment screen and includes popular features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and access to more user-friendly apps.
