RTR vs. Dark Horse: Which Mustang is Right For You?

In 2024, the Ford Mustang was redesigned from top to bottom, and a new trim – the Dark Horse – debuted. While the Mustang has dominated the pony car class for decades, adding the Dark Horse trim was a game-changer thanks to its furious speed and aggressive styling. One year later, Ford debuted the RTR (Ready to Rock) trim with even more track-worthy speed.

When You’re Craving Power & Style, How Do You Choose Between the RTR vs. Dark Horse Mustang?

If you can’t take both home and have to choose between the two, it’s helpful to know which better satisfies your need for speed. You’ll find both at Ford of Port Richey near New Port Richey, Spring Hill, Tarpon Springs, and Palm Harbor.

Read on to get all the details about the two Mustang trims that can fulfill your supercharged dreams.

What’s So Special About the Dark Horse & RTR Mustang Models?

Before addressing the power and performance features in the Dark Horse and RTR models, it’s worth noting what comes standard in the entry-level Ford Mustang EcoBoost. This trim has a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque and gets to 60 MPH in about 4.5 seconds.

The 2026 Mustang Dark Horse is available in three trims: Dark Horse, Dark Horse Premium, and Dark Horse SC. All three are built for speed.

They feature:

  • The legendary naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine
  • a TREMEC® 6-speed manual transmission.
  • Optional 10-speed automatic transmission
  • 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque
  • 0-60 time of 4.1 seconds.

The Dark Horse Premium has similar specs, but has different interior comfort and tech features.

The newest Dark Horse trim, the SC, is expected to arrive in the Summer of 2026. It’s taken the place of the models that once wore the Carroll Shelby nameplate, so they are built for racing. The Dark Horse SC has over 700 horsepower and has optional packages with more race-specific features.

Mustang shoppers can also choose the RTR models. These are hard-to-find, limited-edition Mustang models that are built through a partnership with Vaughn Gittin Jr. The partnership also included modified versions of the Ford Bronco, Ford Bronco Sport, and the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

The Mustang RTR® is available in several “Specs” with various performance tweaks. The numbers are mind-blowing, with horsepower that exceeds 800, and some models that are built only for track rides, especially after spending close to or over six figures for your lightning-fast sports car.

Before deciding between a Dark Horse and an RTR, it’s important to decide whether you plan to use your Mustang as a daily driver or as a track-only vehicle.

What Features Are in the Ford Mustang Dark Horse Collection?

The Mustang Dark Horse is one of the most beautiful Mustang models ever to hit the streets. It sits low and wide, and wears LED headlights that look like they are angry about going less than 100 MPH.

The Dark Horse trim is modeled on the 5.0-liter GT, but with performance upgrades that include

  • Adaptive Dampers
  • Brembo brakes
  • Summer tires
  • Torsen limited-slip rear differential
  • Upgraded chassis components
  • Drift brake

Ford offers a handling package with tow hooks, 19-inch wheels and performance tires, magnetic suspension dampers, and an aerodynamic rear spoiler.

The Dark Horse Premium trim has the same standard performance features but adds heated and ventilated seats, aluminum pedals, and upgraded interior upholstery.

Specs about the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC haven’t yet been fully revealed, but what we know is impressive. This limited-edition Dark Horse trim will have a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that Ford calls the Predator engine. It is expected to have at least 815 horsepower and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission derived from the last Mustang Shelby GT.

To keep the Dark Horse SC light enough for the track and accommodate the massive engine, the new trim has new anti-roll bars, forged aluminum suspension components, and a wider stance. It also has Brembo brakes, a Variable Traction Control system, and 20-inch wheels covered in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup R tires.

What Features Are in the Ford Mustang RTR Models?

The Ford Mustang RTR® models happened after Vaughn Gitten Jr. helped Ford engineers add a drift brake into the 2024 Mustang. For 2026, Ford and Gittin Jr. developed a limited line of race-ready Mustang models with the hopes of introducing younger drivers to the iconic pony car.

The entry-level Mustang RTR® makes styling changes to the EcoBoost models. This model features software that encourages drifting, but doesn’t affect the horsepower and torque. Ford does offer a tuned EcoBoost engine for the RTR trim with 350 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

The EcoBoost RTR has styling features that differentiate it from the standard Mustang. On the outside, the RTR has an upgraded front fascia and grille with an illuminated RTR badge. It also has larger 19-inch wheels, Hyper Lime Brembo brake calipers, and exterior accents covered in a Tarnished Dark Anodized finish.

On the inside, the Mustang RTR® has a special Drift Brake handle in Hyper Lime, which coordinates with the colorful stitching on the upholstery. Drivers will notice the RTR graphics on the infotainment screens, and for added style and comfort, Recaro seats are available.

Drivers who want more than upgraded styling and a Drift Brake can pick one of the ultra-limited edition RTR Spec models. The RTR Spec 2 adds racing and drifting components to the Mustang GT with a 5.0-liter V8 engine. Spec 2 models have the RTR Tactical Performance Suspension with lowering springs and adjustable front and rear sway bars for a more exciting ride.

The Mustang RTR® Spec 3 takes the power to another level. It adds the 3.0-liter Ford Performance Whipple Supercharger to deliver 810 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. It pushes the boundaries beyond any standard Mustang.

Finally, the partnership reaches a pinnacle with the Mustang RTR® Spec 5. It takes the components in the Spec 3 and pushes the specs to 870 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. It comes with an HD Race Intercooler, a tuned BORLA Cat-Back Active Exhaust System, and the choice of a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford and RTR will only produce 50 of the Spec 5 models.
